SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life of Carlton Beil
DESCRIPTION:Carlton Beil in front of the Olmsted-Beil house by Dith Pran\, New York Times\, 1994\n  \nJoin Pat Salmon and Friends of Olmsted-Beil House as we “Celebrate the Life of Carlton Beil.” Carlton was Science Curator at the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences\, and he would run the Education Department at the American Museum of Natural History. In retirement\, he served as a naturalist at the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge\, Clay Pit Ponds State Park\, and other sites. Carlton also worked to preserve historic houses\, including the Olmsted-Beil House. \nOur discussion and slide show will be followed by shared memories from Carlotta Beil-DeFillo\, Tina Kaasmann\, Cliff Hagen\, and other friends\, family and admirers. \nSPEAKER:  Patricia M. SUMMARY:THE OYSTERMEN OF STATEN ISLAND
DESCRIPTION:Menu featuring an oyster 1906 NYPL NR\n  \nThe waters off Staten Island once teemed with delicious oysters. One stretch of Richmond Terrace\, historically known as the Shore Road\, was even referred to as “Captain’s Row” owing to the many oyster-boat captains who purchased or built fine homes along the thoroughfare. In the late 1840s African-American oystermen from Snow Hill\, Maryland relocated to Sandy Ground. They were beginning a new life after enslavement laws in their home state threatened their freedom. This program analyzes the lives and livelihoods of these oystermen\, as well as the local oyster industry which provided their income. \nWEDNESDAY\, FEBRUARY 19\, 2025\, 6:30 PM\nPlease arrive ten minutes before the program starts. Join us as we take a look at the resilient gems that have stood on Staten Island during the Revolution\, the Civil War\, the Great Depression\, and the onslaught of a growing population from the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. DESCRIPTION:Image: Farm on Richmond Hill Road\, 1937\, Percy Loomis Sperr\, NYPL\n  \nWhen seventeenth century European settlers arrived\, they had difficulty planting and growing in unfamiliar territory. Fortunately\, the native Lenape offered assistance. The successful agricultural community that resulted lasted until the 1950’s. Gentlemen farmers\, including Frederick Law Olmsted and Dr. Samuel T. Akerly\, arrived in the nineteenth century. They made significant contributions to successfully tilling the earth. Their farming traditions would be added to and complemented by the growing techniques of immigrant Italians and Greeks at the turn of the twentieth century.
