SUMMARY:HOUSES FROM THE 1600s ON STATEN ISLAND
DESCRIPTION:Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House\, NYPL\n  \nThere are relatively few buildings that literally have foundations from the 1600’s in New York City. This presentation will feature the Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House\, the Conference House\, the Manee-Seguine Homestead\, the Alice Austen House\, the Cubberly-Britton House\, the Olmsted-Beil House (of course!)\, and one historic treasure that was built circa 1700. \nWednesday\, January 22\, 2025\, 6:30 PM\nPlease arrive 10 minutes before the program starts. Light refreshments will\nbe served after the event. \nSPEAKER: Patricia M. SUMMARY:STATEN ISLAND’S FARMING LEGACY
DESCRIPTION:Image: Farm on Richmond Hill Road\, 1937\, Percy Loomis Sperr\, NYPL\n  \nWhen seventeenth century European settlers arrived\, they had difficulty planting and growing in unfamiliar territory. Fortunately\, the native Lenape offered assistance. The successful agricultural community that resulted lasted until the 1950’s. Gentlemen farmers\, including Frederick Law Olmsted and Dr. Samuel T. Akerly\, arrived in the nineteenth century. They made significant contributions to successfully tilling the earth. Their farming traditions would be added to and complemented by the growing techniques of immigrant Italians and Greeks at the turn of the twentieth century. Discover our agricultural ancestors and how they lived off of the land. \nSPEAKER\nPatricia M.
