DESCRIPTION:Learn about the historic preservation plan prepared recently for the Olmsted-Beil House and the work of the Preservation League of Staten Island (PLSI) to advocate for diverse\, cultural landscapes\, and significant historic buildings on Staten Island. \nPresenters:\n \nMargaret M. Hickey\, A.I.A\, Connolly & Hickey Historical Architects \nMs. Hickey will review the findings of the historic preservation plan prepared recently for the Olmsted-Beil House in Eltingville\, Staten Island. She will review the house and property’s history and development as well as the interesting people who have lived there. She will also summarize the findings of the historic preservation plan’s conditions assessment and recommendations\, including a schematic design\, and review the vision for the property\, including next steps for restoration and bringing the house and property to a viable use for the community and beyond. \n \nJohn Kilcullen\, President\, Preservation League of Staten Island \nMr. Kilcullen will discuss the work of the Preservation League of Staten Island (PLSI) to advocate for diverse\, cultural landscapes\, and significant historic buildings on Staten Island and will provide an update of the current PSLI preservation issues and advocacy efforts as well as share details of 2025 Anniversary events. \nHonoree: New York State Senator Andrew J. In retirement\, he served as a naturalist at the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge\, Clay Pit Ponds State Park\, and other sites. Miss Errington was a well-known teacher on Staten Island\nduring the 19th century and ran the popular “Miss Errington’s School” in Rosebank. Some\nof her students included Mary Perkins Olmsted (wife of landscape architect Frederick Law\nOlmsted) and Alice Austen. She also served as a governess and teacher to the Olmsted\nchildren. In addition\, Miss Errington was an amateur geologist and made an important\ndiscovery. SUMMARY:THE OYSTERMEN OF STATEN ISLAND
DESCRIPTION:Menu featuring an oyster 1906 NYPL NR\n  \nThe waters off Staten Island once teemed with delicious oysters. One stretch of Richmond Terrace\, historically known as the Shore Road\, was even referred to as “Captain’s Row” owing to the many oyster-boat captains who purchased or built fine homes along the thoroughfare. In the late 1840s African-American oystermen from Snow Hill\, Maryland relocated to Sandy Ground. They were beginning a new life after enslavement laws in their home state threatened their freedom. This program analyzes the lives and livelihoods of these oystermen\, as well as the local oyster industry which provided their income. \nWEDNESDAY\, FEBRUARY 19\, 2025\, 6:30 PM\nPlease arrive ten minutes before the program starts. Akerly\, arrived in the nineteenth century. They made significant contributions to successfully tilling the earth. Their farming traditions would be added to and complemented by the growing techniques of immigrant Italians and Greeks at the turn of the twentieth century. Miss Errington was a well-known teacher on Staten Island during the 19th century and ran the popular “Miss Errington’s School” in Rosebank. Some of her students included Mary Perkins Olmsted (wife of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted) and Alice Austen. She also served as a governess and teacher to the Olmsted children. In addition\, Miss Errington was an amateur geologist and made an important discovery.
